On the morning of May 31, 2001, Mao Yali, a worker in the First Coal-fired Power Plant based in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, jumped from a building to commit suicide in a family housing facility of the power plant.
Mao Yali, female, was born on June 5, 1959. She worked as a cashier in the Department of Treasury in the power plant.
Mao Yali was bothered by cervical spondyiosis and hypertension due to the long time of sedentary work. She began to practice Falun Gong after her colleague Li Wei introduced it to her.
After a period of practice, Mao Yali no longer slept in as before and felt more energetic. So she got increasingly obsessed with Falun Gong. She read the book Zhuan Falun, recited Falun Gong teachings, and listened to the audio tapes of Falun Gong lectures. She spent most of her time on Falun gong, and was deeply attracted by the concepts advocated by the book Zhuan Falun, such as ascending spiritually, ascending to heaven, and achieving consummation.
In July 1999, Falun Gong was outlawed by government. Although her husband advised her to give up Falun Gong and to live a normal life, Mao Yali turned a deaf ear to her husband’s advice. She was so obsessed that she did not care for her family, her child or even her job. She actively participated in various activities organized by Falun Gong, and became a pious follower of Falun Gong.
By the end of 2000, her husband requested for divorce since his patience had worn out. She was criticized by all of their relatives and friends. In the end, her family did not have alternatives but to lock her up at home, not allowing her to go out. But she continued to practice Falun Gong at home. As a result, she often cried and laughed by turns.
Her husband had to earn their lives as well as took care of their school-aged child. So he asked for help from Mao Yali’s elder sister. He said, “You see, Mao Yali often cries and laughs hysterically. I think she is somewhat mentally disordered. Please keep an eye on her. Don’t give her the chance to practice Falun Gong. I hope this may be helpful. When her condition becomes stable, we take her to the hospital.”
Since then, her elder sister began to look after her. But her sister was so old that she did not have enough energy to keep a close watch on her. When her sister took a nap, Mao Yali practiced Falun Gong. Her behaviors made her sister so angry that she often wept.
One day, Mao Yali said to her sister, “Do you know how to ascend to heaven? If I can ascend to heaven, I will be able to achieve consummation. How wonderful it will be.” Her sister was so frightened by the remark that she did not dare to sleep at that night.
At about nine o’clock in the morning of May 31, 2001, Mao Yali’s sister was in the restroom when she heard a loud bang. She hurried to the bedroom, but she did not find Mao Yali. She found a window was open, so she looked out of the window. She saw one person lying in blood with a large crowd of people surrounding her.
Mao Yali’s elder sister rushed down stairs in unsteady steps. She took Mao Yali into her arms and cried painfully. At that time, Mao Yali, with her mouth bleeding, said weakly to her sister, “Please tell the people, it is impossible to ascend to heaven.” Then she closed her eyes forever.
